Using Categories
This guide instructs you how to use Categories here at HaloDemoMods.com.

Making a Category & Adding pages to Categories
When you make a category, it's just like making a page -- you type it into the search field and click the red link which lets you create that page. You might search for this, for example:
Category: Cool Stuff
The red link you see would then allow you to create a category by that same name, "Category: Cool Stuff".
Be specific when making new categories, and remember to carefully consider Capitalization and speling in the words.
Another method of making a category is to link an existing page to your new category by adding the following line at the beginning or end of the page. (At HDM we prefer adding categories to the ends of pages.):
[[Category: Cool Stuff]]
Then you will see that the page was added to your new category. So you click on the red category name at the bottom of the page and put something on your category page so the category looks like it exists. For example, you might make it a subcategory of another category... and to do this you just add a category link to your category page, such as:
[[Category: Stuff]]
So then the hierarchy of categories would look like:
It is very important that you include your category as a subcategory to an existing category, if appropriate. That way, your category and its pages can be found within the Category Tree.
Working with HDM's Existing Categories
First, take a look at the HDM Category Abstract, which lists all the major categories for Mods, Tools, Tutorials, Gametypes and Tags.
You should add your page to the most specific category that applies to it, for example Halo Demo Multiplayer AI Mods, rather than just Halo Demo Mods.
However, there are separated collection categories to which every related page should be added. These currently include only the following category:
So first, find the appropriate categories, then work your way down the list and add any very specific categories to the bottom of your mod's page; add them in the order in which they appear in the HDM Category Abstract. The only exception to this listing order is with Tags, where the main purpose should be listed first; more on that under the following Tags section.
Mods
According to the Revised Uploading Rules, you should make a new page for each mod that you upload to HDM. You attach your mod to the bottom of that page and tell us about the mod there on its page.
When you're done describing your mod to us, it's time to categorize it.
Mod-related categories can be found under HDM Category Abstract. The mod-related subcategories are found under each game version, for example, Category: Halo Demo and Category: Halo Full. So what you would do is find the most specific category that applies to your mod and add that category to the bottom of your mod's page.
If you don't see a category there that is appropriate for your mod, you should make a category for it as described above. Remember to add your new category to an appropriate existing subcategory so people can find your mod and use your category with their own mods.
Finally, and only specifically with playable maps and mods, please add your map's or mod's page to Category: Mods. But with all other kinds of files, do not add them to their most simple category. This is only done with playable, scenario-based maps and mods! For example, please do not add a tool's page to Category: Tools, etc.
Tools
The same method applies as mentioned previously with Mods. You'll be using the Tools Category and its subcategories, though.
Note that I've renamed what was commonly called "Mod Packs" to "Tool Packs", and you can use this category appropriately.
Tutorials
The same method applies as mentioned previously with Mods. You'll be using the Tutorials Category and its subcategories, though.
Tutorials on how to use modding applications should have their own individual pages and such a tutorial should be added to Category: Documentation and if it deals with modding tasks, then either Category: Tutorials or Category: Modding Techniques. That page should also be listed on the application's Talk page under a section called "Documentation". Here is an example: Talk:Eschaton.
Tags
The same method applies as mentioned previously with Mods. You'll be using the Tags Category and its subcategories, though.
Rather than listing each category in hierarchical order like with other categories, with tags, you should add the most specific category first. For example:
[[Category: Lightmaps]] [[Category: Bitm]]
...instead of...
[[Category: Bitm]] [[Category: Lightmaps]]
This enhances legibility.
Also, you don't have to go crazy listing every tag type remotely referenced. Just include the MOST SIGNIFICANTLY FEATURED tag type to which this pertains. For example, a general AI tag would probably just reference Category: Actv and possibly include Category: Bipd if that were special, but wouldn't feature Category: Actr since it's not the main showcase of that tag release.
Gametypes
The same method applies as mentioned previously with Mods. You'll be using the Gametypes Category and its subcategories, though.
HDM Category Abstract
The Dictionary is now the top-level category for every category at HDM. When you make a page for an uploaded map, mod, tool, tag, tutorial, etc., you should add it to the most specific category that you can which you see below. If it's a playable (scenario-based) map or mod, you should also add it to the isolated Mods category (so they are all in one place).
Here is the new organization of the major categories at HDM:
- Category: Mods -- an isolated category page that links to every playable (scenario-based) Halo map or mod at HDM (and elsewhere on the internets)
- Category: Documentation -- for information on using a specific application like swordedit or doing a computer-user task like setting up a network connection
