Tools

From HaloDemoMods
Jump to: navigation, search

It would be very difficult to modify Halo maps without some really amazing tools. Here they are!

Please note that many of the following applications are only compatible with Mac OS X, or only their Mac versions are linked here. Some backbone modding applications, like Eschaton and HMT, are also available for Windows platforms. However, applications that are only useful to Windows platforms have not been listed here but may be freely available online elsewhere. See our links page for more Halo modding web sites.

There are many modding applications, but for most modding needs, only three or four are recommended:
HDemoLauncher (for mod and gametype management),
Eschaton (for editing the main metadata),
swordedit (for moving things around in the scenarios), and
HDemoEditor (for gametype creation and editing).

Download: File:HelpFull Halo App 1.0.zip

Version: 1.0

Requirements:

Author: Tyler777

Trivia: This application uses the same icon as MacRadiant (not NetRadiant) which is a map editor for games with the Quake III engine like "Jedi Academy" or "Nexuiz".

The hex editor in Helpful Halo Appies takes a while to load, so you might use a different hex editor instead.

This application has four applications in one: a Map Protector, Hex Editor, HMT/SparkEdit String Fixer, and TOA (Chunk Cloner) 1.25. The author credits Conure, Tyler777 and Altimit01 for their help.

Sparky's Scenario Madness is a template map containing a scenario with the maximum number of references possible. Version 2.0 contains a standard Bloodgulch BSP. Version 2.0 is based upon further research and contains a single multiplayer map file with all the references that would be potentially useful to Halo Demo modders, excluding AI encounters.

The final versions are almost completely maxed-out for those who really want all their options open. Consider yourself warned that the final versions can take a long time to mod.

Space Template v2

Space Template 2.png

Download: File:Sparky's Space Template v2.zip with reference-enhanced scenario; File:Sparky's Space Template v2a.zip with plain asteroid field scenario

Requirements:

Author: Sparky

Trivia: Combines a custom-made scenario and a custom-made SBSP!

Create a map set in outer space! Now you can use active and synced machines and a whole bunch of other cool features! The map size is as large as the Halo engine can handle: 150,000 cubic world units. Includes a custom-made space sky, sweet Euro-techno background music, plenty of options for asteroids including a real-life asteroid model and the almighty metal box for building your very own scenery map!

Version 2a (the second download link above) does not contain an enhanced scenario, but provides an asteroid field template instead. Player starting points are by default located on top of the (sometimes very small) asteroids. Everything is up around z coordinate 1000. Once you open the map with SwordEdit, hold the space bar to move the camera up for a few seconds until you see the asteroid field. Navigating the scenario in SwordEdit will be extremely fast thanks to the complete lack of bsp rendering.

Cliff Starter Template

Requirements:

Author: NutHead

A starter map which has the spawns on the cliffs.

Bitmask Converter

Download: File:Bitmask Converter.app.zip

Version: 1.0

Requirements:

Author: Yummy

Trivia:

Description from MGM:

This script takes a long (4 bytes) as an input, then puts it into binary. Then, you can type in a byte number (1-32) and it will change that byte automatically for you. And, the best part is, there's no need to worry about little endian. Just type the long in from hexedit, then click convert, then change whatever byte the HMT plugins tell you to change.

BSP Nuller

BSP Nuller.png

Download: File:BSP Nuller.zip

Version: A1.0

Requirements: Halo Demo

Author: Modzy

Trivia: Null out BSPs!

Description from MGM:

Source Code (version 2.1) File:DeGran source version 2.zip

Version: 2.1

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher. It will open in 10.3.9, but there might be some issues.

Authors: 002 for the application, Sparky for the icon and cleaning up the UI.

Trivia: Version 2.1 was built over version 1.0c using similar code. If you want the first version, 1.0c, you'll have to compile it from source which can be found in this link: File:DeGran Source.zip

This application can convert degrees to radians and back. This is useful for meta editing something that requires a measurement in radians. Eschaton

Eschaton 0.6.2

Download: File:Eschaton 0.8.1.1.zip

Download: (Windows): File:Eschaton 0.8.2 Windows includes Sparky's plugins.zip

Alternate Downloads: File:Eschaton 0.8.1a.zip; Version 4 Source Code; Release Directory on MediaFire; unnoffical 0.8.2 update by Vegerot; and official 0.8.2 update (XBOX ONLY); Sparky's Plugins are included with this program as of version 0.8.1a

Version: 0.8.1.1 (normal) and 0.8.2 (for Xbox maps only)

Requirements:

Author: Altimit01

Trivia: Eschaton is written in the same language as HMT.

Eschaton is one of the cornerstone Halo Demo modding applications. Its user-friendly interface complements its simplicity; the application reads HMT and Entity plugins that can be modified to enhance its functionality.

Eschaton can be used to mod demo, full and CE maps. It cannot directly open the sounds.map or bitmaps.map files, however (yet). Note that the ui.map file is treated just like any other playable map, and can therefore be modified.

Eschaton 0.7.2 adds the ability to PMI from more tags and includes the option to internalize bitmaps. Eschaton 0.7.3 is a stable internal beta that can be used to import tags beyond the normal understood limit. (The normal limit is slightly more than 7200 tags.) Eschaton 0.8 introduced the ability to export tag data in a fashion that is superior to the Halo Hacking Kit, along with many other requested features like the ability to directly import data from CE maps without first converting the CE maps to full or demo versions.

Eschaton 0.8.2 allowed expanding of xbox maps, but it creates a problem with rebuilding, so Altimit recommends that you use 0.8.1 unless you need to open xbox maps.

Version 0.8.1a includes Sparky's Plugins by default.

Version 0.8.1.1 has a small issue where it does not display bitmap images for editing. Use 0.8.1 or 0.8.1a for bitmap editing instead (only applies to bitmaps.map file editing, when bitmaps are not internalized).

Taxi's Gametype Builder Pack

Taxi's Gametype Pack Icon.png

Download: File:Taxi's Gametypes-Bulider Pack.zip

Author: BobInDaShadows

Trivia: Bob used to publish his programs under the label Scotiasoft which can be found in the get info of several of his programs.

The Halo Mapping Tools (HMT) application is similar to Eschaton (listed above), but is primarily valued for its metadata handling and simple BSP editing capabilities. The experienced modder will probably tell you to use Eschaton instead of HMT, and then only use HMT for metadata and certain other jobs. It was written in REALBasic, and is based off of MonoxideC's code for HMTv3.1 for PC.

HDemoLauncher

HDemoLauncher logo.png

Download: File:HDemoLauncher.dmg

Source code: File:Hdlsource.zip

Version: 1.4.2

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4 or later

Author: Nil; Icon by Slappey

Trivia:

This is the Halo Demo Launcher. The application has several features. The first is being able to manage a collection of Halo Demo mods and being able to turn them on or off. The second is to give you the ability to download and install mods from online. The third is being able to change gametypes when hosting games. The forth is being able to preview live Halo Demo servers and connect to any one of them. All of these tasks can be achieved without HDemoLauncher, but the application allows you to do them more productively.

Hex Editors

Before the dawn of Halo Demo modding applications (ca. 2004?), dedicated and enthusiastic Halo Demo modders relied upon raw hex code editing. The process of discovering each line's function within the bloodgulch.map file created a secretive, esoteric society... almost cult-like... and these "hard-core" modders are today greatly revered for all but their simplest modding feats.

Nowadays, hex editing is pretty much a last-resort method, or "what you use when you can't do it the easy way" (referring to UI-based modding apps). Some advanced coding cannot be accomplished (yet) with even our best home-grown tools, but thankfully, the cults have given us much of their knowledge...

A few Hex Editors are listed below. A brief comparison: HexEdit is the most outdated of them, but it has a nice compare documents feature. 0xED is the most native one and unsurprisingly also the easiest one to use. Hex Fiend is the most powerful one and has the most features.

HexEdit

HServerChanger & HClientChanger

Hsclock128x128.png Keycard.png

Download: File:HChangers.dmg

Source code: File:Hscsource.zip

Version: 1.3 & 1.1, respectively.

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4 or later. HServerChanger may require an administrator's password.

Author: Nil; Icons by Slappey

Trivia:

HServerChanger allows you to change your Halo Demo server without having to close the server and re-open it.

HServerChanger has support for making the Halo Demo host a 'spectator', which removes him from games. HServerChanger also has support for restarting Halo Demo games, which of course would be useful if you turn on remote access in the preferences window.

With remote access being turned on in HServerChanger, other people can connect by using HClientChanger. What this means is that you can give access to other people so that they can control your Halo Demo server from different machines. The server machine just needs to open the port 2395 (the default one) on TCP, set up a password for clients to enter in, and have HServerChanger running.

Much thanks goes to Slappey for creating both of these application's icons, Modzy for helping me implement the restart game feature, Modfox and Dirk for helping me improve host spectator mode, and the beta testers (especially phoenix clan) for testing these programs.

More info can be found at this mgm thread.

Arr, Mayte! Often surreptitiously referred to as QAR, Queen Anne's Revenge is a controversial application that is used to convert Halo CE or Halo Full maps to Halo Demo. One must also have Halo Full in order to use this application.

QAR leaves invisible holes in the collision of the terrain of large maps. This application is perhaps antiquated by Pearl, which provides more reliable conversions. Therefore, it is recommended that one use Pearl instead of QAR.

This program lets you EXPORT images into .dds format, which is used in Halo and many other games. It does not READ .dds files however. If you need to open .dds files, try Graphic Converter for Mac (sketchy support for DDS, but lets you convert) or Windows Texture Viewer for PC (basic DDS viewing capabilities, doesn't let you convert). If you use Windows, also see the NVIDIA Developer Zone legacy tools page and their plugins for Photoshop (Windows version only).

Author: sword

Trivia: The opening title music is called "Genesis" and is by Justice from the album "Cross" hence the name of this version of swordedit this music can be found if you look inside the swordedit application.

This handy-dandy scenario editor was created by sword (MGM). The application is currently in it's "Genesis" version; it was released as recently as this past summer. A few people wanted precision beyond that able to be achieved with swordedit's slider bars, so they modded the application so that you can type in exact number values, instead. This modified version is also included above.

swordedit is the successor to SparkEdit (see above). In his credits, sword says:

A special thanks goes out to Grenadiac, Bobindashadows, Altimit01, and Conure. Grenadiac for the original Sparkedit code that has made swordedit possible, Bobindashadows for the sparkedit mac code that inspired me to create swordedit, and Altimit and Conure for scenario definitions that have made swordedit so powerful.

Indeed, swordedit is powerful, and extremely useful. (Thanks, sword!)

Actually, it's pretty broken. Yell at sword until he remakes it and releases version 2.
