Introduction

Welcome to the Halo Demo dictionary of terms!

This is the place to go when you want to define something esoteric from Halo or Halo Demo. What separates this page from other web sites like Halopedia? This list should be a reference for modders and should contain terms specifically related to modding or which primarily benefit those who are looking to mod Halo's map files.

How to use the Dictionary

  • Like a regular dictionary, terms should be listed alphabetically.
  • You can add your page to this dictionary by putting [[Category:Dictionary]] somewhere on your page.
  • Four-letter tag types are listed separately and also at the beginning of related quick definitions. (Note that the tags category is also listed below.)
  • The definition list is below. Expand the list at will, alphabetically.

Quick Definitions

B

Banshee
The Type-26 Ground Support Aircraft, more commonly known as the Banshee, is the Covenant's standard ground assault aircraft.

It is a purple flying vehicle used by enemy Covenant forces. Equipped with a dual-plasma gun and an explosive green fuel rod bolt.

Banshee Noob
A player who uses the banshee in a unprofessional way, by running them over.
Battle Rifle
The BR55 Battle Rifle is a United Nations Space Command infantry service rifle. It is notable for its powerful three-round burst fire and accurate 2x scope, making it more efficient at farther ranges than the MA5 series assault rifles.

C

Collision Model
(coll) An invisible surface that prevents players and/or projectiles from passing through.
CSS
Cascading Server Side. A hosted mod/map that joining players do not need to download beforehand. This term is used to describe maps that will effectively work for all players, even though only the host is using it. This implies that the content is already inside the default map and that the server sends any changed data to all the joining players' computers. When players can join a hosted game but the content is not displayed properly on their end, the map is not considered CSS.
In the Mod Database, the CSS value is given three labels: Yes, Semi, and No. "CSS: Yes" indicates that the clients do not need to download the map and they will see all the changes. "CSS: Semi" means that the client's game will not crash without the map, but they will not see all the changes; a description usually follows this label, indicating any issues the players might have in this situation. "CSS: No" means that the client should not join the server without the modified map installed first, or else their game will automatically quit. If you are confused still, then ask yourself, "Can players join the game without having the mod?" and apply the answer to the label: yes, yes but they won't see it right, or no.

D

Dud
A plasma grenade (most often) that doesn't explode because of a glitch more often than not. Most encountered in Halo 3, very dangerous, treat like a land mine as they seem to be prone to explode if anyone gets close.

E

Energy Sword
a powerful weapon that makes you run faster and one melee can kill a player.mostly used in halo 2 and 3
Elite
An alien species belong to the Covenant, the are 8 feet tall and have pincer mouths. They are one of the strongest enemies you will face in the game. While grunts and Jackals can do a dramatic dive to avoid being hit/blown up/run over, elites have the ability to barrel roll. They could also dodge your melee attacks by quickly moving away, and when they smack you, it hurts a bunch. Beware of them and their ability to drain you of your shields quicker than you can say Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. try it.

F

Flame Hog
A warthog with a (by default) black and yellow design that shoots unlimited yet reload-neccessary rocket launcher ammo from the gunner seat.
Fuel rod
A type of covenant rocket launcher that fires fuel rods. Fires at an arc and overheats with too much use.
Fragmentation Grenade
A grenade with an explosion that has a large radius, you start with four of these.
Flood
These parasitic parasites are your most annoying foes in halo. They infect humans and elites, and can hold every weapon except for the energy sword and the fuel rod (at least in halo 1)Combat forms can shoot you with just slightly flawed accuracy, or they could charge at you and smack you multiple times. Parasite form flood simply jumps towards you and pops on your shield, but beware, as they always come in groups, and while you seem to have a shield and a cyborg armor protecting you, your marines are vulnerable, and is good as dead once one of these little parasites attaches on to them. Carrier forms explodes when killed, and may also explode willingly to hurt you. Upon explosion, releases 4 parasite forms.

Grunt
An alien species of the Covenant. They come in 3 different colors! Yucky Yellow, Radish Red, and Slimy Silver. Beware of slimy silver grunts with fuel rods, otherwise, they're cannon fodder that the Master Chief mows down effortlessly. All they get is plasma pistols and needlers. And they don't even charge up the plasma pistol. Use grenades. Or a weapon. Or just hit them in the face one or two time(s).

H

HUD
Heads Up Display. The HUD displays all vital information regarding your shield level, health, ammunition, grenades, radar and team color.

Hunter
An alien race belonging to the Covenant Always acting in pairs, they have a hand that's a metal shield, and another which is a fuel rod. Most of their body is covered with metal plating, that no projectile base weapon can go through. They can shoot at you at a distance, then melee when you're in range. There is a soft spot at the back of every hunter, and if you shoot it with a pistol, it'll die immediately. A rocket to the face works as well.

An alien species of the Covenant, in Halo: Combat Evolved, they are always found with plasma shields and plasma pistols. They supposedly have higher hearing and smell senses, and therefor are used by the covenant as scouts in battle. Jackals don't pose a huge threat, they tend to shield up in combat and stand their ground: a melee or a well placed grenade can stop them from shielding, leaving them vulnerable. But do beware that in legendary difficulty, the shields deflect projectile-based weapons.
